Report - Scientific Symposium on Bromeliad Diversity and Preservation

Event Description

Event type: Other - Symposium
Number of Participants: 30 scientists, 40 public, 1 local news reporter

Dr. Theresa Bert reports:

This scientific symposium, held as part of the 23rd World Bromeliad Conference, was a great success and was well attended, considering that scientists were speaking to people from all walks of life about the scientific aspects of their common hobby (growing bromeliads). The scientists spoke in terms that the hobbyists could understand and gave excellent information about bromeliad habitats, distribution, and preservation from threats (principally deforestation in Latin America). I posted both Biodiversity posters (those that were available through this website) in prominent places to link the symposium to Biodiversity Month, placed numerous copies of the colored Biodiversity handouts (also available through this website) in the room where the symposium was held and on the registration table for the conference in which this symposium was held, and posted the following announcement in several appropriate areas:

SCIENTIFIC SYMPOSIUM ON BROMELIAD DIVERSITY AND PRESERVATION
This Scientific Symposium, sponsored by the Bromeliad Society International, the Marie Selby Gardens Bromeliad Identification Center, and other donors, is a contribution to the DIVERSITAS, International Biodiversity Observation Year, Biodiversity Month. As with many species of plants and animals on earth, bromeliad biodiversity is under the threat of reduction due to human activities.
Get involved.
Work to save biodiversity in any that you can. Your contribution will make a difference.

I also made a short announcement at the beginning of the symposium. I described the IBOY and Biodiversity Month and told the audience that the symposium was a contribution to Biodiversity Month activities.
