Site Description
The Fu-shan research station
of the Taiwan Forestry Research Institute, TFRI, was established
in 1990. Research themes are: nutrient budget, hydrological
processes, plant-animal interaction, forest regeneration
mechanism. The Fu-shan site, within the Ha-pen Nature Preserve
(established in 1986), was designated in 1992. The infrastructure
includes two gauged weirs in two small forest watersheds
and two observation towers. The research station collects
many types of data including: maps of geology, topography
and soils; air temperature and humidity, precipitation,
solar radiation, wind speed and direction, soil moisture;
chemical composition of precipitation, throughfall, stemflow,
soil solution and streamwater, plant tissue, litterfall,
soil; leaf area indices; vegetation composition, above-ground
biomass, tree growth/mortal, litterfall and decomposition,
phenology; species composition of flora and fauna.

Soil
Soil types are Hapludults
on more stable terrain and Dystrochrepts on more erosive
surface areas. The nutrient status is as follows: total
amount of N, P, K, Ca, and Mg of the 0-60cm soil depth
to be 6,946, 1,769, 73,840, 803, and 13,650 kg/ha, respectively;
types of soil fauna: 523 species, or 122 families, or
15 orders of insects, of which 240 species, or 52 families,
or 10 orders to be Acarina; 12 species or 14 families
of Chilopoda, Diploda and Crustacean to be found.

types are Pristine subtropical moist forest, composed
predominantly of Lauraceae and Fagaceae.
