Global Litter Invertebrate
Decomposition Experiment
Data Synthesis
Workshop
Rauischholzhausen Castle, Giessen, Germany
March 28-29, 2003
Data from the standardized
litter experiment, that took place in 33
sites around the world, has been flowing into Bio
Track for morphological sorting, and to the Natural
Resource Ecology Lab (NREL) for litter chemical
analysis. Because we are faced with an enormous amount
of data on decomposition rates across latitudes and some
30,000 species associated with litter decomposition,
this first meeting addressed:
“How do we best utilize and analyze the data sets
if we are to understand the relationship of soil biodiversity
to an important ecosystem process?”
The workshop, which took place on March 28th and 29th of
2003, was hosted by GLIDE Advisory Board member Dr.
Volkmar Wolters at The Castle of Rauischholzhausen
Conference Center in Germany. GLIDE meeting organizers and
participants would like to acknowledge Dr. Wolters and his
institute for the friendly hospitality and financial support
that helped make the workshop possible.
GLIDE was a project of the International
Biodiversity Observation Year, and is sponsored
by the NSF, the Soil Science Society of America, and
an anonymous US foundation.
