Site Description

The GLIDE site in Jena, Germany (a nature reserve since 1990) consists of the southeast exposed slope of the Mittlere Saaletal. The site has triassic landscapes (Saale-Ilm Plateau) and man-made grasslands due to mowing and possibly viticulture from the Middle Ages up to the end of 19th Century). Since 1997, primary research has been on the effects of slope-gradient to vegetation and faunal communities.

Site Location

The site is located in Thuringia of central Germany at 50° 57' 10" N latitude, 11° 35' 40" E longitidue.

Site Area

Site area is 1.25 ha.

Site Elevation

Site elevation is 210-310 m.

Annual Rainfall

Annual rainfall is 587 mm.

Annual Temperature

Annual temperature is 9.3 °C.

Soil

Soil type is loam (lower part) to chalk rendzina (upper part) above limestone; pH is 7.4.

Native Forest/Vegetation Types

Native vegetation is xerothermic grassland, probable final forest type: Pinus sylvestris (pt. Pinus nigra), mixed forest (Pinus sylvestris, Fagus sylvatica, Quercus petraea, Fraxinus excelsior).

Principal Biome/Ecoregion

Ecoregion is temperate deciduous forests
