Site Description

Short grass south of Onefour, Alberta, Canada.
This site is a dry shortgrass prairie, semi-native grassland.

Site Location

Coordinates at Onefour are: 49 deg 1.30 min N, 110 deg 23.35 min W

GPS 12U E544663 N5430041.

Site Area

Located on a range research station at Stavely, Alberta.
Total facility area in semi-native fescue grassland: 390 ha (960 ac).

The GLIDE study was confined in a grazing enclosure (barbed wire fence) 100 m X 150 m.

Native Forest/Vegetation Types

Dominated by Festuca scabrella (rough fescue), F. idahoensis (Idaho fescue), Danthonia parryi (Parry's oatgrass). Forbs include Geranium viscosissimum (sticky geranium), Anemone patens (prairie crocus), Lithospermum ruderale (wooly gromwell), Delphinium bicolor (low larkspur) and Balsamorhiza sagittata (balsam-root). Slopes and ravines may have scattered Populus.

Principal Biome/Ecoregion

Foothills Fescue grassland subregion. Mainly on glacial outwash and moraine deposits of the hills of the lower east slopes of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta. Soil is mainly dark brown and black chernozem. Climate is characterized by milder winters, frequent chinooks (temporary warm periods of a few days, resulting from reverse adiabatic warming as air moves downslope from the montane to grassland regions). Winter and summer percipitation and moisture availability are greater than in other nearby grassland ecoregions
