Travel and Accommodations

How to get to Giessen and Rauischholzhausen

Giessen is about 60 km north of Frankfurt.

1. Train

If you travel by train your destination should be GIESSEN (from the North via Kassel, from the South via Frankfurt).

2. Train connection from Frankfurt airport to Giessen

  1. Go to Terminal 1 lower level B (arrivals = Ankunft). If you arrive at Terminal 2 please take the Sky-Line-Shuttle to Terminal 1. If you have a "Fly and Rail Ticket" you don't need an extra ticket for the train. If not, you have to get a ticket from the ticket machine (Automat-see #2) or from the DB Travel-Center (personal service). Your destination is GIESSEN. If you don't have any German money get it at this level at one of the Change Bureaus (Geldwechsel).

  2. Take the escalator down to the next level (DB); here you will find the Automat for a ticket.

  3. Go to GLEIS 1 (Platform 1); the trains come every 15 to 20 minutes. Then you take the underground on platform 1 (for example line 8 (S8), direction Hanau or Offenbach) to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof (main station). At Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof (Hbf) you have to change trains. This will be the third stop.

  4. Follow the crowd up two flights of stairs to the main train station. Follow the sign ”Fernzüge” to reach the platforms, where the trains leave to Giessen.

  5. Look at one of the posted boards for departures (Abfahrt) for a train to Giessen (direction Kassel). Trains are relatively frequent during commuter times. A fast one (RE or IR) will only stop in Friedberg and then Giessen. The ride will be approximately one hour.

If you would like to see the train schedule in advance, you can go to http://www.bahn.de - this is the German rail network. Click on the "int. guests" tab to display the pages in English. There are trains going to Giessen from the airport as late as 11 pm.

3. Train/bus connection from Giessen to Rauischholzhausen

If you want to travel from Giessen to the castle in Rauischholzhausen you first take the train from Giessen to Marburg (direction Kassel, see above). You can take with RE or IC (see above). Between Marburg and the castle in Rauischholzhausen there will be a shuttle bus service provided by Dr. Wolters' group from the University. The shuttle will be pre-arranged according to the travel itinerary you submit to Holley Zadeh. The duration of this journey will be about 45 minutes.

For your return journey you take the train in Marburg back to Giessen (or Frankfurt, it is the same direction).

4. Car
