BioBlitz

A BioBlitz is a tool for biodiversity exploration, education and investigation. Usually coordinated by museums, botanic gardens, or local authorities, a BioBlitz brings together scientists and naturalists in an area to document biodiversity present at their back door (e.g. a park or natural area). Designed as part scientific endeavor, part contest, part educational event a BioBlitz pits biologists in a race against time to see how many species they can count in a 24 hour biological survey. New information on the distribution, occurrence of fauna and flora is generated, and associated outreach activities raise public awareness of biodiversity and its relevance to everyday life.

Organizing a BioBlitz involves:

  • selecting a site
  • recruiting of scientists
  • organizing equipment and facilities
  • compiling and publicizing results
  • providing educational and outreach activities
  • securing funding or donations

Two excellent online resources to help you plan a BioBlitz are:
